A deep-bodied amberjack; sometimes darker in coloration;
front of soft dorsal and of anal fins high and elongated;
body more flattened than banded rudderfish or greater amberjack;
no scutes.

are associated with Sargassum.

Spawns offshore, apparently during spring, summer, and fall.
